The daughter of previous South African Head of State Jacob Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror allegations at the commencement of her court case in the coastal city of Durban.

The defendant, 43 years old, is being charged over remarks she posted on social media several years back during violent protests in South Africa that followed the apprehension of her father.

A week of chaos in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including plundering and intentional burning, caused at least 300 dead and resulted in damage worth an projected $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).

Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of fuelling this turmoil and is charged with charges of encouragement to commit terrorism and public violence.

Context of the Case

The demonstrations were focused in the regions of the Gauteng province and KZN and were triggered by the previous president's detention for disobeying a legal directive to appear as a witness at an probe into accusations of corruption while he was in power.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has consistently denied the charges against her, with her lawyer previously labelling the prosecution's legal argument as insufficient.

She has also consistently said the allegations against her were an attempt to settle political grievances with her father after he founded his own political party and ran against the ruling party.

Backing and Court Representation

This was reinforced by the Zuma foundation, which claimed the proceedings was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and kinship persecution" against the ex-leader and his family.

A few of backers from her political organization, the political party, appeared outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other organization officials attended the proceedings inside.

Her legal team has maintained that the testimony presented by the state is unconvincing and fails to provide concrete grounds for a conviction.
