Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza Chief Executive Steps Down Following Pivot Into Fried Chicken.
A head of Domino's Pizza Group who suggested the United Kingdom might have reached pizza saturation while expanding the company into chicken products has been replaced after conflicts with its directors.
Executive Change
Rennie is exiting after only 24 months in charge, and will be replaced on an temporary basis by the company's chief operating officer, Frampton, while the pizza giant looks for a long-term chief.
The outgoing executive, who worked for Domino's for a substantial period, had attempted to shift Britain's biggest pizza delivery company towards chicken offerings, commenting in a recent interview there was not “huge potential” left in the British pizza industry. He observed chicken was the quickest rising menu item in the international market.
Board Disagreements
Reports indicate that there was disagreement between the CEO and the directors over his focus and business vision, although the company's official statement said he was leaving “by mutual agreement”.
Recent Product Introduction
In September, Domino's introduced its poultry product line – which the former chief described as a “bold new chapter” for the organization – and is piloting it in over 200 locations in the north-west of England and the province.
While the company is still going to roll it out across its extensive network in 2026 as intended, it views chicken products as a supplement for its primary pizza operations.
Board Statement
Bull, the company chair, commented: “Directors think that there are a range of possibilities to drive further growth and value creation in Domino's core business. We are prioritizing finding the ideal CEO to oversee the careful implementation of that expansion plan.”
Market Difficulties
In the latest update, Domino's, which has a substantial customer base in the British Isles, said orders dipped by 1.5% in the latest quarter. In the summer, it alerted that the quick-service industry had “intensified” as it attributed reduced spending in the period before the budget and increasing labor expenses for disappointing revenue and a 15 percent decline in half-year profits.
Competitors are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain announced the shutting of 68 restaurants a recently, after the business behind its British operations faced financial collapse.
Health Initiatives
Trying to keep up with customer preferences towards balanced diets, the company has launched reduced-calorie items, such as its light base line of bakes below 400 kcal as well as meat-free and wheat-free options. A big pepperoni bake has 2,311 calories. A large cheese and tomato pizza has over 2,100, while a personal has 909 calories.
Interim Leadership
The interim chief has been with the company since 2021, and previously worked for the gambling company a well-known operator. It is understood that she does not want to occupy the top job permanently.
She said: “The company has a multiple ongoing development and operational projects that we will be concentrating on implementing at speed.”
She added these comprised additional efforts on the organization's procurement system and product development, and its customer retention initiative.
The pizza chain is also without a permanent chief financial officer until the spring, when Andy Andrea starts from the beverage producer C&C Group. Until then, Richard Snow serves as temporary CFO.
