Formal charges have been brought against two men following a suitcase robbery where a suspected irritant spray led to people being hurt at the UK's busiest airport.

Tyrone Richards, 31, and Anton Clarke-Butcher, 24, now face two robbery charges and two counts of using a harmful chemical, as confirmed by court officials.

The charges follow an probe of an attack at the parking structure at Terminal 3 on the weekend. Prior to the attack, two women were robbed of their suitcases stolen after getting out of a parking garage elevator, authorities reported.

A toddler was one of the people hurt in the event. Several persons went to hospital for treatment and were later discharged.

The incident – which authorities stated was not part of a series and not being treated as terrorism – resulted in disruptions to rail services and the partial closure of the Central Terminal Area tunnel and the Terminal 3 car park for a brief period.
